The European Parliament has decided to modernize periodic technical inspections (PTI) by introducing measures that offer more freedom to drivers and more rigorous technical controls. Thus, the technical inspection can be carried out in any country within the European Union, not just in the vehicle's registration state. Drivers who choose this option will receive a valid certificate for six months, but must also carry out periodic checks in the country of origin. The new regulations emphasize electric and hybrid vehicles, which will have mandatory checks for airbags and emergency automatic braking. Motorcycles with a capacity greater than 125 cc will also be subject to technical inspections. In addition, to combat fraud, service centers will need to record the mileage at each intervention, and recalled vehicles for defects that have not been repaired will not be able to pass the inspection. Tests for particulate emissions and nitrogen oxides will be introduced, but their implementation will be at the discretion of each member state. The new rules will be discussed with the governments in the EU Council to finalize the legislation.
