The Siret - Bărăgan canal, a project started in 1986, will have a contract signed within a week, according to the Minister of Agriculture. Work on the canal, which will irrigate 400,000 hectares by gravity-fed water from the Danube, will start in two months. The project has a total planned length of 198 km and aims to provide water for irrigation, reduce flood risks and facilitate shipping. It is currently in the rehabilitation phase with an estimated investment of €3.5 billion.
