On Sunday, the Cathedral of the Salvation of the Nation, the largest Orthodox church in the world, will be consecrated, thus becoming functional and open to the faithful. At the ceremony, at least 2,500 guests are expected, including Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Patriarch Daniel, along with a assembly of 65 hierarchs and 70 priests. Another 10,000 believers from across the country will participate in the service.
The cathedral, built over the last 15 years, cost over 200 million euros, coming from donations and public funds, which has generated controversy. With a height of 127 meters, it is the tallest Orthodox place of worship in the world, featuring a design inspired by Brâncovenesc and Byzantine styles. The interior painting, done in mosaic technique, covers 25,000 square meters, and the materials were brought from Venice and Carrara. The cathedral is seen by believers as a symbol of national and spiritual rebirth, in a country where the Orthodox Church remains a trusted institution.
