The fire that destroyed the Bellagio club in Mamaia was arson, according to authorities. The building, abandoned and not connected to utilities, burned quickly, causing panic among tourists. Firefighters had difficulty putting out the blaze due to the fire hydrants not working. The club, owned by George Ilie, was known for its extravagant parties in the 2010s, but became a ruin after it was abandoned due to a lack of planning permission. Local authorities have been criticized for dragging their feet in taking over the property.
