The aging of the EU population: The average age increases, Romania records declines

On January 1, 2025, the population of the European Union (EU) reached 451 million people, an increase of 4% compared to 2005. European statisticians emphasize a widespread aging of the population, with 6% being 80 years old or older.

The average age has significantly increased, reaching 44.9 years, with Romania having one of the highest increases. The most populated countries in the EU are Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland, which make up 66% of the total. In contrast, Romania has recorded an 11% decrease in population over the last two decades.

Population density varies considerably, with Malta having the highest density and Finland the lowest. Also, on January 1, 2025, there were 230 million women and 221 million men in the EU, with a ratio of 104.2 women for every 100 men. The proportion of children and adolescents under 15 years has decreased, while those aged 65 and over have increased to 22% of the population.

Romania faces significant demographic challenges, including an increasing average age and a declining population.
