Stelian Ion, former Minister of Justice from USR, stated that the referendum proposed by President Nicușor Dan for magistrates represents a legitimate consultation, having a solid constitutional basis. Ion emphasized that, although the term referendum has been used in a common sense, it is essential to clarify the legitimacy of the CSM in front of the body of magistrates. He mentioned that, in the event it is found that the CSM no longer has their support, CSM members should resign, as a matter of good sense.

Ion explained that the president has the responsibility to initiate such a consultation to verify whether the CSM acts in the public interest or in the interest of a small group. He also called for the modification of the procedure for the dismissal of CSM members to allow for a more effective response in serious cases. In this context, President Nicușor Dan announced that he will organize the referendum in January, and the CSM reacted, stating that it will not tolerate interference in its activities.
