Former Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete, a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), accused the Save Romania Union (USR) and the National Liberal Party (PNL) of “double standards and hypocrisy” in their approach to the Constitutional Court of Romania on Tuesday evening. The reaction comes after the liberals announced that they might refer the matter to the Constitutional Court if the Mureșan Government is rejected by Parliament and President Nicușor Dan does not call snap elections.
In a message posted on Facebook, Rogobete argued that the same parties had criticized the Court as being “politically controlled” following the decision concerning the provision targeting Dominic Fritz. The Social Democrat stated that state institutions cannot be considered legitimate or illegitimate depending on political interests and called on the USR and PNL to decide whether or not they trust the Constitutional Court.
PNL Vice President Alexandru Muraru said that the liberals are prepared to refer the matter to the Court if Parliament cannot form a government and the head of state does not call snap elections. He argued that the democratic solution is to return to the voters, not to prolong negotiations for new political arrangements.
Interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță said that the decision would be made by the leaderships of the USR and PNL, when the time comes, adding that people have grown tired of the “political noise”.
