The Romanian Intelligence Service, in cooperation with Romanian and foreign partners, announces that it has identified a Russia-coordinated sabotage network involved in the fire that broke out on September 14, 2026, on the premises of the Carfil industrial platform in Brașov, near CARFIL SA, a subsidiary of ROMARM.
According to the SRI, several citizens of former Soviet states, residing in European Union countries, were allegedly involved in the operation. Judicial proceedings in this case are under way in Romania and other European states.
Investigations indicated that the network may not have operated solely on Romanian territory. Coordinators in the Russian Federation allegedly assigned its members targets in the region, including state-owned and private arms factories, as well as other sites of military and industrial importance.
The SRI maintains that the incident is part of a broader campaign of sabotage coordinated by Russia in Europe. Checks conducted this year have also identified other attempts that allegedly targeted sites in Romania, including international military facilities or centers used to train Ukrainian forces.
The institution warns that recruitment may begin on social media, with offers of money for seemingly harmless activities, such as photographing sites. Subsequently, the tasks may escalate to arson, destruction, or assassinations. The SRI, DIICOT, the Ministry of National Defence, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs are continuing their investigations.
