Diana Șoșoacă made a series of controversial statements at an international conference held on October 22–23 at the Russian House in Belgrade. The Member of the European Parliament claimed that Latin originated from Romanian and that the Vatican had confirmed this theory—statements that contradict the explanations accepted in historical linguistics.
In her speech, the leader of S.O.S. Romania said that Romania should not be “Europe’s fool” and reiterated an idea she had also expressed in August 2023, at the party’s summer school.
Șoșoacă also spoke about the situation of places of worship in the West. She claimed that some cathedrals had been converted into restaurants or other spaces and said that she had been offered a cathedral in France for purchase for 10,000 euros. She provided no details confirming the offer.
Referring to the 2024 presidential election, the MEP said that she would have received 67.5% of the vote and become president of Romania in the first round if her candidacy had not been rejected. In the same intervention, she cited the dispatch of her son as an observer to Russia as an argument that the regime in Moscow was not a dictatorship.
