Sorin Oprescu, former mayor, remains under judicial control in Greece, having the prohibition of leaving the country and the obligation to periodically report to the police. His refusal to be extradited is based on health issues and the conditions in Romanian prisons. Sentenced to 10 years and 8 months for corruption, he fled to Greece before the final sentence was pronounced in May 2022. Romanian authorities will follow the legal steps for extradition, considering that the detention conditions in Romania are now compliant with European standards.
