The National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives has published documents showing how the Securitate, alongside its role of repression, confiscated items from packages sent by Romanians who were emigrating. These goods included toys, clothes, food, and even intimate lingerie, which ended up at the Consignment to be sold. Although correspondence was guaranteed by law, the Securitate intervened, extracting and reading letters, and many packages did not reach their recipients.
In the last years of the communist regime, the Securitate sought to generate funds for the state budget, resorting to the exploitation of these packages. Although the confiscation of goods was illegal, the Securitate capitalized on the items through the Consignment, a semi-private store where citizens could sell various products. This practice illustrates the abuses of the communist regime and its impact on the daily lives of Romanians.
