Vladimir Lipaev, the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Romania, stated that the Romanian economy is in a precarious situation due to the sanctions regime imposed by the EU, in the context of the War in Ukraine.

In an interview for the TASS agency, Lipaev emphasized that Romania has been forced to purchase hydrocarbons at higher prices, which has led to significant increases in prices for agricultural products and disruptions in logistics chains. The ambassador highlighted that inflation in Romania is three times higher than the EU average, and GDP has grown by less than 1%. Additionally, public debt has exceeded 60% of GDP, and exports are significantly lower than imports. Lipaev mentioned that the economic policies of previous and current governments could influence these negative trends, especially the increased government spending in the election year 2024.
