Răzvan Popescu, the general director of Romgaz, stated that the company, the largest producer of natural gas in Romania, has no interest in releasing gas into the atmosphere and is committed to complying with EU Regulation 2024/1787 regarding the reduction of methane emissions. Romgaz operates 131 structures and nearly 3,000 production wells, having developed infrastructure over the course of 40-45 years.
Although the company has implemented internal verification and control structures, Popescu acknowledged the challenges related to reducing emissions and the need for a phased approach to comply with EU requirements. Additionally, Romgaz participates in the I-MER project, which supports Romania in effectively applying European regulations regarding methane. Romania is responsible for 20% of methane emissions in the EU energy sector, and experts warn that the implementation of regulations could be fragmented without a clear system of sanctions and monitoring.
