According to INS data, on January 1, 2025, Romania had a population of 21,739,400 people, a decrease of 0.5% compared to the previous year. The urban population was 12,051,700 and the rural population was 9,687,700, with a slight increase in rural areas. The phenomenon of demographic ageing became more marked, with the elderly population outnumbering the young, with the ageing index rising to 132.4. The average age of the population reached 42.9 years and the median age 43.7 years. Full data will be available in May 2025.
