Romania's natural gas imports increased by 116.3% in January

In January 2026, Romania recorded a usable natural gas production of 654,400 tons of oil equivalent, a decrease of 1.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS). In contrast, natural gas imports increased significantly by 116.3%, reaching 341,100 toe. The National Commission for Strategy and Forecasting (CNSP) estimates an increase in natural gas production at an average annual rate of 1.7% until 2027, with a forecast of 7.907 million toe for 2026 and 8.176 million toe for 2027. Imports, on the other hand, are expected to decrease, with a reduction of 2.7% in 2026 and 6% in 2027, against the backdrop of increased production and the commissioning of new capacities.
