In July, the highest pension in Romania was more than 98,000 lei net, but it fell by 9,506 lei in August to 88,558 lei after the introduction of the 10% health contribution. The top 10 pensions in the public system exceed €10,000 a month and are based on contributions. Also, the average pension in Romania is 2,814 lei (€560), with a total number of pensioners of over 4.5 million.
