The Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, announced that Romania has the largest population of brown bears in Europe, with an estimated number between 10,600 and 12,700 individuals, according to a recent study. This study, part of the project 'Implementation of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear Population', was conducted with European funds of over 10 million euros and involved 800 specialists who collected approximately 24,000 samples.
The study not only estimates the number of bears but also zones their presence into four distinct categories: key conservation areas, conflict management areas, sustainable management areas, and marginal areas. Buzoianu emphasized the importance of this study as a responsible management tool that allows for the protection of people and the conservation of the species, highlighting the need for balanced management between biodiversity and the safety of citizens.
