The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rogobete, stated that starting from February 1, 2026, the first day of medical leave will no longer be paid by the National Health Insurance House, according to an ordinance adopted on December 30, 2025. The measure aims to reduce abuses related to short-term medical leaves, a practice also encountered in other countries within the European Union. Rogobete explained that, following previous measures, approximately 120 million lei have been saved per month. Additionally, employers will bear the compensation for days 2-6 of medical leaves, while CNAS will cover the costs starting from the seventh day. The minister mentioned that this measure is temporary and may be revised depending on the evolution of the phenomenon of fictitious medical leaves.
