The interim Minister of Agriculture, Tánczos Barna, had a meeting with Jessika Roswall, the European Commissioner for the Environment, to discuss the issue of bears in Romania.
During the discussions, Barna requested that the brown bear be removed from the category of strictly protected species, proposing more flexible management rules for member states with bear populations in a favorable conservation status.
A team of experts from Romania will present in Brussels the results of a scientific study based on genetic samples, and this data could influence the adaptation of European norms.
The European Commission is already evaluating the Directives on Birds and Habitats
Tánczos Barna also mentioned the issue of Romanian farmers facing bear attacks on their farms, which has raised concerns about people's safety.
