Deputy Prime Minister and interim Minister of Agriculture Tanczos Barna called for coherent and complementary funding for the livestock sector at the informal meeting of EU agriculture ministers. The meeting took place from September 6 to 8 in Dublin, Ireland, amid discussions on the European strategy for livestock farming and the EU Protein Plan.
The minister argued that livestock farming plays a strategic role in food security and that the European Union must preserve its production capacity, avoiding dependence on imports that do not meet equivalent standards. For Romania, animal husbandry is a traditional and essential sector for agriculture and the rural economy.
Tanczos Barna stressed the need for investment in farm modernization, digitalization, production processing and irrigation, particularly for small and medium-sized farms. He also called for financial support during the transition to the new animal welfare rules, as well as proportionate regulations on the transport of animals.
Another central topic was the prevention and control of diseases in the sheep and pig sectors. The minister called for greater flexibility regarding regionalization, compartmentalization and vaccination, arguing that the current rules may affect farmers with healthy animals and lead to the loss of export markets. Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Croatia agreed on joint action in this area.(?)
