Romania received on Wednesday the first tranche of 2.5 billion euros under the 'Action for the Security of Europe' (SAFE) defense instrument, which has a total allocation of 16.7 billion euros. SAFE, a financial instrument with a budget of 150 billion euros, provides loans to member states for joint purchases of ammunition, missiles, and defense systems.

This initiative is part of the European Commission's ReArm Europe/Preparation for 2030 plan, which aims for investments of over 800 billion euros in defense. The funding will help Romania to modernize its military capabilities and strengthen its resilience.

The Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius, emphasized the importance of this funding for European defense and global security. SAFE will continue to provide financial support as Romania meets the agreed milestones. The funding is provided through EU loans, offering attractive conditions for member states.
