Romania, Poland, and Hungary are in a crucial stage of a legal conflict with Pfizer and BioNTech regarding the COVID vaccine contracts signed during the pandemic. The lawsuits, taking place in Brussels, concern billions of euros for unaccepted or unpaid vaccine doses, amid declining demand and existing stockpiles.

The court is expected to rule soon on the legal obligations of these countries to pay for the ordered doses, even if they no longer use them. Romania has suspended deliveries for approximately 28 million doses, worth over 600 million euros, while Poland faces a potential payment of nearly 1.4 billion euros.

Representatives of Romania emphasize that the agreements must be analyzed in the context of contract law and EU legislation, while Pfizer insists on the fulfillment of commitments made by the states. This conflict highlights the tensions between member states and pharmaceutical companies, as well as how the European Union has managed vaccine procurement.
