The former Minister of Health, Ioana Mihăilă, stated that the loss in the first instance of the lawsuit against Pfizer is a consequence of Romania not fulfilling its contractual obligations regarding the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines. She explained that the agreement, negotiated at the level of the European Commission for the period 2022–2023, was accepted by all member states, and the quantities were established based on population, without the possibility of renegotiation.
Mihăilă emphasized that the decision to enter into the contract was made at a critical moment in the pandemic, marked by the emergence of the Delta variant and high demand for vaccination, noting that the current situation could undergo changes in court during the process. At the same time, a court in Belgium has ordered Romania and Poland to take vaccines worth 1.9 billion euros, in the absence of an official position communicated so far by the Romanian authorities.
