Romania had the highest increase in fertilizer prices in the European Union, with a rise of 16.8%, more than twice the EU average of 8%.
This trend has persisted throughout the entire year, with Romania recording significant increases in all four quarters. The largest increases were also observed in Ireland (+15.3%) and the Netherlands (+12.1%), while Bulgaria recorded a decrease of -6.1%.
This increase in prices has negative implications for the costs of agricultural products and, implicitly, for inflation. Additionally, in 2025, fertilizer prices have risen steadily, following a decrease in 2023 and 2024.
In the context of these increases, the Senate of Romania has adopted a law that classifies the production and storage of chemical fertilizers as critical national infrastructure, following the financial difficulties faced by Azomureș, the largest fertilizer producer in the country. The Romanian state took over the assets and employees of the company, without taking on the losses.
