Radu Marinescu, the Minister of Justice, discussed directly on Digi24 about the case of Abdullah Atas, a Turkish citizen sentenced for the murder of a police officer in 2015. Atas benefited from over 20 leaves during his detention, being assessed as having good behavior, which led to his transfer to a semi-open regime. The Minister mentioned that Atas was rewarded 72 times and had 24 leaves without incidents.

Marinescu emphasized that detailed checks will be carried out at the Prahova Penitentiary and that firm measures will be taken in case any problems are identified. He explained that Romanian criminal policy includes a restorative component, allowing for the rehabilitation of offenders, even in the case of serious crimes. Offender assessments are conducted by specialists who analyze their behavior and attitude in prison. Abdullah Atas was placed on national wanted list after he did not return from a 3-day leave, granted on January 23.
