The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest will organize its traditional procession with the relic of Saint Pope John Paul II on Sunday, on the streets of the capital. The event will bring together representatives of the Catholic and Greek Catholic Churches, priests, monks, nuns and worshippers.
The procession will begin at the monument to Saint Pope John Paul II, located at the intersection of Schitu Măgureanu Boulevard and Pictor C. Stahi Street, near Cișmigiu Park and the headquarters of the Apostolic Nunciature. The celebrations will be attended by His Eminence Aurel Percă, His Eminence Giampiero Gloder and His Excellency Mihai Frățilă. The event will be broadcast live by Angelus TV.
The relic consists of a piece of cloth containing a few drops of blood from the former pontiff and was presented to Saint Joseph Cathedral in 2011 by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, the pope’s former personal secretary.
Saint John Paul II is commemorated on October 22, the date marking the inauguration of his pontificate. The monument in Bucharest commemorates his historic visit from May 7 to 9, 1999, the first visit by a pope to a predominantly Orthodox country. In 2026, 27 years will have passed since that moment.
