The Vatican Museums are opening to the public the exhibition “A Century of Popemobiles,” dedicated to the vehicles that enabled the pope to get closer to the faithful during pastoral visits and public events. The official opening will take place on Thursday, following a preview presented on Wednesday.
The exhibition brings together eight Mercedes-Benz versions used by pontiffs since 1930. The oldest item is a Mercedes-Benz Nürburg 460, presented to Pope Pius XI on May 23, 1930. The vehicle featured a silk brocade-upholstered armchair and finishes made of precious wood and metal.
The exhibits also include the 300 d Landaulet, presented to Pope John XXIII in 1960. Its removable rear side windows allowed the pontiff to interact more easily with people. In 1980, Mercedes-Benz developed the 230 G for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Germany, equipping it with a transparent dome that provided protection and visibility.
Pope Leo XIV, a car enthusiast, thanked Mercedes-Benz for its partnership with the Vatican. He also mentioned the electric popemobile offered to Pope Francis and called for innovation to support human dignity, the protection of creation, and the common good.
