According to INS data, in 2024, 11,578,048 Romanians, i.e. 60.7% of the resident population, were connected to sewerage systems, which represents an increase compared to the previous year. Also, 59.6% of the population was connected to sewerage systems with treatment plants. The highest connection rates were in Bucharest-Ilfov (96%) and the lowest in the North-East (41.1%). 99.3% of the population in urban areas are connected to sewerage, compared to only 19% in rural areas.
