In the commune of Mădăras, Bihor County, an old cemetery was almost completely destroyed by bulldozer in 2023, after the land was illegally sold by a municipal employee, Maria Isai, to a businessman. The land, previously used as a meadow and cemetery, was transformed into construction land without the authorities intervening. Locals, who believed the land belonged to the Orthodox Parish, were shocked by the sale and destruction.

Legal actions by a local resident, Gheorghe Lăzău, to contest the sale were dismissed, and the Prosecutor's Office closed the case, citing lack of legitimate interest. The Municipality and the Prefecture stated that the land is not part of their heritage, and the Parish could not intervene. The community was left without protection of its historical and spiritual heritage, and the authorities did not answer for their actions.
