The General Assembly of Nuclearelectrica Shareholders decided, with a majority of 90%, to invest in the NuScale small modular reactors (SMR) at Doicești, thus approving the Final Investment Decision (FID). The project initially plans to build a single reactor, which will operate as an experiment, and the acquisition of the other five modules will depend on its performance. The first module, with a capacity of 77 MW, will be acquired by RoPower, while the rest will be the responsibility of NuScale, provided that the first reactor is operational.
The estimated cost for one reactor is 1 billion dollars, including not only the acquisition but also the engineering. Additionally, Nuclearelectrica can access a credit line from Eximbank USA to cover 80% of the project costs. Although the site is prepared, financial challenges and the timeline for commissioning, estimated after 2030, remain important aspects to manage.
