President Nicușor Dan intervened in the controversy generated by the adoption of a law by the Senate of Romania, through the votes of PSD and AUR, which imposes NGOs to publicly disclose the list of donors under the threat of dissolution. In a public post, Dan emphasized that transparency is important, but the obligation to make the names of donors public could inhibit citizens' support for NGOs, thus affecting civil society.

He proposed that representative organizations of civil society be invited to discussions to talk about these regulations. The bill, initiated by AUR, was adopted by a majority of votes and stipulates the obligation for NGOs to declare all sources of funding annually. USR voted against the initiative, considering it an illiberal act, similar to measures from authoritarian regimes. The project is set to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies, which will decide its fate.
