Before the announcement from Brussels, President Nicușor Dan stated that Romania cannot technically confirm the origin of the drones involved in the incidents in the Black Sea, although he mentioned that drones that had previously crossed Romanian territory had Russian components. He placed the attacks in a broader context of pressure exerted by Russia on European states and said that the objective is to create tensions within societies and reduce support for Ukraine.
At the same time, Nicușor Dan announced that Romania would once again request military support from NATO allies to protect its territory and coastline until it develops its own capabilities. In parallel, he also called for support from the European Union for a regional security center in the Black Sea, in cooperation with Bulgaria, to coordinate monitoring and responses to threats.
In previous discussions, Romania and Bulgaria had spoken about the need for stronger measures against drones at the EU and NATO levels, following attacks on commercial vessels. The president also emphasized that, in the case of the drones, there would be no direct intentions involved, but that disinformation and attacks on critical infrastructure aim to undermine public trust and European support for Ukraine.
