President Nicusor Dan has asked Parliament to approve the participation of up to 20 Romanian troops, starting in the second quarter of 2026, in the Operational Command for the Multinational Force in Support of Ukraine and its subordinate command-and-control structures. The request was sent to Parliament on March 30.
On Tuesday, the joint standing bureaus of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate decided to send the request to the defense committees, with a view to placing it on the agenda of a joint plenary session.
Romanian troops would participate as staff personnel in areas such as strategic planning, current operations, security, and cyber defense. The command, activated in 2025, operates on a rotational basis.

In his letter to Parliament, the president cites the deterioration of the European security environment following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the need to strengthen Romania’s role within the “Coalition of the Willing.” Nicusor Dan emphasizes that participation in the planning process does not entail deploying troops or other capabilities on Ukrainian territory.
The president also asked that the reconfiguration of Romania’s contribution be approved by the defense minister, within the personnel limits established by Parliament.
