The Bucharest Court of Appeal decided on Wednesday to suspend the execution of the 10-year prison sentence for Nicușor Constantinescu, former PSD baron of Constanța, convicted for abuse of office and corruption. The decision is valid for a period of three months, but it is not final and can be contested within three days.

Once released from Jilava Penitentiary, Constantinescu will have several restrictions, including a ban on leaving the country, the obligation to report periodically to the police, and restrictions on changing his residence. His conviction was pronounced in July 2019, when he was found guilty of using at least 30 million lei from public funds for unfinished projects. Constantinescu was also involved in other corruption cases, including that of former mayor Radu Mazăre.
