Brussels, November 11, 2025 — MEP Nicu Ștefănuță supports the inclusion of the right to safe and legal abortion among the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the European Union, within the framework of the citizens' initiative "My Voice, My Choice," which is currently under debate in the European Parliament. The MEP linked the issue of reproductive rights to policies for youth, arguing that investments in education and health must go hand in hand.

Regarding the European citizens' initiative "My Voice, My Choice," which calls for guaranteeing access to abortion in the EU, Ștefănuță expressed confidence following the initial victories in Parliament.

"I am very pleased that we managed to find a majority in the European Parliament, even two-thirds in the FEMM committee, now let's see what the majority will look like in plenary, but I will fight for this right to abortion, its guarantee at the European level," he stated. He concluded this topic by emphasizing that this endeavor is not just a popular demand, but a matter of fundamental rights. "It is also supported by 80% of women in Romania and it is something fundamental that must also be supported by men," added the MEP.

Regarding scholarships, he mentioned that European funds have allowed for an increase in student scholarships, a concrete measure through which the Union can support equal opportunities. "Access to education and control over one's own body are part of the same European freedom," said Ștefănuță, emphasizing that the rights of young people and reproductive rights must be treated as strategic priorities in the new European legislative cycle.

"Many young people have supported me and I fight for their rights. (...) I do not believe that scholarship cuts have led to significant savings, although I understand the needs to adjust the deficit."

The MEP explained that, instead of criticizing, he actively sought pragmatic solutions to compensate for the losses suffered by students. "I am trying to find solutions and then, together with Minister David and Minister Pâslaru, we found this solution to supplement part of the scholarship losses, through unused European funds from the European Social Fund," he specified.

"I like to think constructively and to find solutions, and not just to complain and criticize, and I try to do this on all the topics I am involved in."
