Mircea Geoană states, in a Facebook post, that although the American military presence in Europe will be reduced, this will not affect the executability of NATO's defense and deterrence plans. This decision, which follows a successful NATO Summit in The Hague, is part of a negotiated arrangement that encourages a more balanced transatlantic relationship, with a greater role for European allies in collective security.
Geoană emphasized that the reduction of the American military presence at Mihail Kogălniceanu base is not surprising, being the result of a financial and strategic analysis. He mentioned that the rotational model in Romania is more costly than the permanent presence of troops in Poland or the Baltic states. He also highlighted the prioritization of Northern Europe in the context of the strategic partnership between Russia and China. The reduction, which will not exceed one battalion, is part of a strategic review by the Pentagon that redirects resources towards the Indo-Pacific.
