PSD Deputy Mihai Fifor argues that Romania needs a profound administrative-territorial reform, but warns that it must not be reduced to the merger of local councils. In a message posted on Facebook on Thursday, he pointed out that the current organization, designed in 1968, no longer corresponds to the country’s demographic, economic, and social realities.
Fifor states that the reform could strengthen administrations, specialized staff, and resources for investment, but public services, schools, clinics, and local infrastructure must remain accessible. He also drew attention to concrete problems for citizens, such as the distance to the new town hall, the handling of identity documents, property documents, and tax records.
“Administrative-territorial reform must not be confused with simply reducing the number of town halls. We can merge ten communes and retain the same problems, only on a larger scale. Reorganization can bring stronger administrations, specialized staff, and consolidated resources for investment,” Fifor wrote, according to Digi24.
The deputy believes that the change must be based on financial viability, demographic trends, access to services, economic potential, geographical particularities, and community cohesion, not merely on a population threshold. He calls for communities to be consulted, guarantees for representation, and genuine decentralization, warning that the reform must not transfer the administrative burden onto people or deepen distrust in the state.
