PNL Senate leader Daniel Fenechiu supports the idea of administrative-territorial reform and the reorganization of the administration, but calls for the projects to be discussed with local authorities and civil society before the Government assumes responsibility. The liberal’s reaction came after PSD President Sorin Grindeanu announced that he would propose adopting the two reforms in the coming weeks or months, by March 2027.
Fenechiu said that measures concerning the merger of certain administrative-territorial units, reducing the number of institutions and cutting public spending are, in principle, beneficial. He warned, however, that without a politically and socially accepted project, the reforms remain “beautiful words.”
About a month ago, the PNL had requested the establishment of a parliamentary committee for administrative reform. The liberals are awaiting details on the reorganization criteria, including the minimum number of residents for communes and the possible application of the “amalgamation” model used in the Republic of Moldova.
Fenechiu argued that many small communes cannot cover their operating expenses, while mergers, digitalization and maintaining service points in villages could reduce costs without moving public services farther away from citizens.
