Ciprian Ciucu, the general mayor of Bucharest, emphasized in a press conference that the budget of the Capital is in a critical situation, with the debts of the Bucharest Transport Company (STB) to ANAF reaching 1.38 billion lei. This situation could lead to the insolvency of STB if the debts are not paid. Ciucu mentioned that over 53% of the budget expenditures are allocated to public transport and heating, and the addition of social payments and other expenses raises this percentage to over 60%. The mayor highlighted that financial problems have accumulated over the last ten years, and the municipality is facing hidden expenses of hundreds of millions of lei. He also mentioned that Termoenergetica is facing significant debts. For the next year, Ciprian Ciucu estimates that the City Hall would need at least 8.5 billion lei for operations and debt payments, not including investments. He stated that it is nearly impossible to balance the budget in its current form.
