Marius Andruh was elected on Tuesday as the new president of the Romanian Academy, obtaining 84 votes out of the 157 cast in the second round of voting. The elections took place on April 7, 2026, a day after the celebration of 160 years since the establishment of the Academy.

Andruh competed against Mircea Dumitru, former rector of the University of Bucharest. Ioan Aurel Pop, the current president of the Academy, explained that the elections for the leadership of the Academy take place in two stages, and the candidacies for the positions of vice-presidents and secretary general will close on April 14, 2026. Pop mentioned that, although he can no longer run for president, he might consider a candidacy for vice-president or secretary general. He emphasized the importance of limiting terms to two, believing that he has accomplished enough in the role of president.
