Mario Draghi, the former president of the European Central Bank, issued a severe warning to Europe during the ceremony for the International Charlemagne Prize, held in Aachen, Germany. He emphasized that, for the first time, Europe is in a state of vulnerability, being "truly alone together".

Draghi highlighted the need for European mobilization to respond to the new geopolitical reality, in which the USA is becoming "more hostile and unpredictable", which could affect security guarantees. His warning comes in a difficult economic context, with weak growth and a productivity gap compared to the USA, exacerbated by Donald Trump's return to power. Draghi proposed an ambitious plan to revitalize the European economy, with an annual budget of 1.2 trillion euros, and emphasized the importance of investments in artificial intelligence and defense. He also criticized the slow decision-making process of the EU, which hinders necessary actions, stressing that the vicious cycle of inefficiency must be broken.
