Marin Voicu, former mayor of the Ciorani commune, was found guilty of destroying evidence in a case of local election fraud in 2020, receiving a sentence of two years and six months in prison, a ban on holding a public office, and the loss of his mayoral mandate. Voicu, who had a long political career with PSD and PNL, challenged the decision of the Ploiești Court of Appeal, but the appeal was rejected.
In 2021, bags containing over 4,300 ballots disappeared from the Mizil Court, and Voicu was accused of facilitating the theft by providing information about the security of the building. He was also convicted of incitement to electoral fraud, and is currently awaiting a ruling on appeal. The investigation revealed the methods by which the elections were fraudulently conducted, including obstructing surveillance cameras and manipulating ballots. Four employees of the Ciorani City Hall admitted to the facts and signed guilty pleas.
