Upon her arrival, Maria Corina Machado was greeted by supporters chanting "libertad!". Machado, who has been living in hiding since August 2024, has been criticized for her ties to Donald Trump's ideas and for supporting American operations in the Caribbean Sea. Her daughter, Ana Corina, accepted the award on her behalf and condemned the violence and persecution in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee cited "a journey under conditions of extreme danger" to justify the absence of the laureate, before confirming her arrival on the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
