Police detained a 66-year-old man who allegedly stole a money pouch at Henri Coandă Airport and allegedly tried to flee to Moldova

A 66-year-old man was detained for 24 hours after allegedly stealing a money pouch containing €3,000, a mobile phone and personal documents from a restaurant at Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport. Police were notified of the incident on September 23, 2026.

According to the Romanian General Police Inspectorate, the man subsequently allegedly attempted to leave Romania and travel by car to the Republic of Moldova. He was identified and apprehended at the Galați Border Crossing Point before crossing the border.

The suspect was taken to the Henri Coandă Air Transport Police Service headquarters, where investigations continued. Police fully recovered the damages, and the property was returned to the injured party.

The man is due to appear before the court with a request for pretrial detention. Investigations are continuing to establish all the circumstances surrounding the incident. Until a final ruling is issued, he benefits from the presumption of innocence.
