The parliament speaker asked Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson to form a government after the left’s narrow victory

The speaker of the Swedish parliament announced on Friday that Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democratic opposition and former prime minister, had been given the mandate to form the new government after consultations with party leaders.

Andersson must unite four left-wing parties, which together hold a majority of just three seats in the 349-seat parliament. The negotiations are difficult: the Centre Party rejects the inclusion of the Left Party in the government, while the latter is making its support conditional on participating in the executive. Andersson must present the results on September 28. If she fails, incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will try to form a majority.
