Ioan Neculaie, former owner of the football team FC Brașov, has received a 10-year prison sentence, according to the court portal, but the decision is not final and can be appealed in higher courts. His conviction is part of a series of investigations targeting important names in the Romanian business environment. The investigation, which began in 2016, was triggered by suspicions regarding the improper management of funds from his commercial activities, including the sale of players and broadcasting rights.
According to prosecutors, Neculaie allegedly harmed the companies he controlled by illegally extracting funds, with an estimated damage of around 40 million lei. Although he has been convicted, Neculaie has the option to appeal, and the process could take months.
