The president of the Romanian Academy, Ioan-Aurel Pop, said that Ion Iliescu was a significant president for Romania, playing a key role in the transition to democracy. Pop recalled Iliescu's contributions to the repeal of the communist constitution and the adoption of the new 1991 Constitution. He also underlined the need to be dignified in the face of the former leader's death, recognizing his impact on the country's recent history. Iliescu died at the age of 95 and will be buried in a small ceremony.
