The Local Council of the municipality of Hunedoara decided, on Wednesday, unanimously, to declare April 10, 2026, as 'local mourning day' in memory of the legendary coach Mircea Lucescu. The flag of Romania will be flown at half-mast at the offices of institutions and public authorities in the city, and sports and cultural institutions will adjust their programs accordingly, according to the announcement made by Corvinul Hunedoara on Facebook. Mircea Lucescu, who finished his playing career at Corvinul Hunedoara in 1977, became a symbol of the community, both through his sports achievements and his human impact.
The mayor of the municipality, Dan Bobouțanu, emphasized Lucescu's importance to the city, mentioning that he was a source of inspiration for young people, demonstrating to them that they can achieve success through hard work and education. In 2013, Lucescu was declared 'Honorary Citizen of the municipality of Hunedoara', in recognition of his outstanding merits. Although he was not born in Hunedoara, he has always been considered one of the most beloved people from Hunedoara.
