A significant discovery was made in Iași, during the restoration of the equestrian statue of Stephen the Great, located in front of the Palace of Culture. The restorers found an old document, 144 years old, hidden in a sealed bottle in the belly of the horse statue. This document provides information about those who contributed to the construction of the monument, dating back to the reign of King Carol I.
The document, written in black and purple-violet inks, is in good condition, and the restorers intend to use UV photography techniques to decipher the invisible signatures. The manager of the Palace of Culture mentioned that, at a depth of 50 centimeters below the pedestal, there could be another document. This discovery is part of the restoration works of the statue, contributing to the understanding of the history of this important symbol for Iași and Romania. The document will be exhibited next month at the Palace of Culture, kept in special conditions.
