The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ) is examining on Thursday, October 15, the appeal filed in the case in which former SRI first deputy director Florian Coldea is accused of influence peddling and money laundering. The decision may establish whether the case will proceed to trial on the merits and what the next procedural steps will be.
The court previously reviewed the legality and validity of the indictment and rejected the requests and objections raised by the defendants’ lawyers. The new appeal challenges this ruling.
The case came to public attention in May 2024, when the DNA announced the criminal prosecution of Florian Coldea, former SRI general Dumitru Dumbravă, lawyer Doru Trăilă, and businessman Dan Tocaci. Prosecutors claim that, between 2023 and 2024, sums of up to 700,000 euros plus VAT were allegedly requested to obtain favorable rulings in a criminal case. In July 2025, the DNA announced that the four individuals had been indicted.
Investigators also claim that certain contracts and invoices may have been used to conceal the origin of some funds. The accusations are to be examined by the court, and guilt can be established only through a final judgment.
Coldea’s name also appears in a criminal case in Albania, but the two cases are distinct, and any possible links must be confirmed by the authorities.
